Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
At CARPLS, we’re proud to celebrate the rich cultures, stories, and contributions that drive our mission of equity and justice. Supervising Attorney Patricia Cintrón-Bastin shares what this month means to her and how her identity as a Latina attorney shapes her work.
Todos tenemos poder. We all have power. This is the message I share with our Latine clients every day — a reminder that their voices matter and their stories deserve justice.
As a Latina attorney, I am part of a small but mighty group — only 3% of attorneys nationwide are Latinas. This statistic underscores the importance of representation in every space where decisions are made. It’s not just about being present; it’s about being heard, being seen, and being a source of strength for our communities.
Working as a Boricua supervising attorney at CARPLS Legal Aid, I witness firsthand the impact of culturally competent legal support. Every day, I help clients navigate complex systems, advocate for their rights, and reclaim their power. It’s more than a job — it’s a calling.
One of the most unforgettable moments in my journey was meeting Justice Sonia Sotomayor at a book signing. When I told her about my role, she looked me in the eyes and said, “Continue to fight the fight.” Her words moved me deeply — a validation of the path I’ve chosen and the battles we continue to face.
Being a Latina is not just part of my identity — it’s the lens through which I serve, uplift, and empower. Even in disheartening times, I find solace in knowing that CARPLS is here for our community, and that I am part of a movement that brings hope, justice, and dignity to those who need it most.
