Tori’s energy was contagious as we began our Zoom call. She had been a client of CARPLS’ Early Resolution Program, part of the Cook County Legal Aid for Housing and Debt initiative, which helps people facing housing and financial challenges. In Tori’s case, she was navigating a difficult housing situation and searching for a way forward.
“What we want to do today, Tori, is understand your journey. Your story stood out to us, and we want to hear how CARPLS played a role,” we started.
Tori didn’t hesitate to share her experience. She had left behind a difficult situation and was ready for a fresh start. A nonprofit program had promised financial assistance for her first month’s rent, giving her the confidence to move forward. But after settling into her new home, she faced unexpected delays and confusion regarding the promised support. Tori had to act. She took matters into her own hands to cope with the sudden financial strain.
“I was running between different organizations, trying to find someone who could help. It was frustrating, and for a while, I felt like I was hitting dead ends,” she recalled.
Then, she found CARPLS—and everything changed.
She approached the consultation with a CARPLS attorney with an open mind, unsure of what to expect. “They would either help me, or I’d keep looking,” she thought. But what she found was more than just legal guidance—it was empowerment. “It almost seemed like magic,” she said. The CARPLS team treated her with care, made sure she understood her options, and gave her the tools to advocate for herself.
With CARPLS’ support, Tori successfully negotiated a move-out agreement with her landlord. Once she followed through on the agreement, the landlord dismissed the case and sealed the court record, protecting her credit and clearing the way for new opportunities. With this fresh start, Tori took charge of her future. She embraced a new chapter in the Southeast, where she and her son are thriving. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and the power of advocacy.
